In January 2013 I travelled to Girona with PB Performance coached physiotherapist Ben Jeeves to set up a cycling challenge for a group of students from The West Grantham Academy ST Hugh’s.
During the week we discovered much of the beautiful scenery and testing roads in the area including the Rocacorba climb; an ascent of 13.8k with an average gradient of 6.5% and numerous sections of up to 18%. A ride to the Costa Brava coast was also included where a coffee and cake refuel took place! The most stunning view of the trip was experienced at the top the the climb of Els Angels; the students will experience this on their final day before descending the 11km back to Girona.
On a few of the days we had the pleasure of riding with professional riders Dan Martin, Dominique Rollin, Matt Brammier, Lucy Martin and Marjin de Vries. It’s always interesting to see how easy they do their recovery rides; I see many riders do their recovery far too hard and at a pace that is neither recovery nor training.
The week was organised by Bike Breaks Girona; a company specialising in cycling holidays in the Girona area. Our guide for the week was ex professional rider Neil Martin father of Garmin Sharp’s Daniel. Neil is an excellent guide and was able to show us the beautiful scenery of this area and ensure we stayed on the quietest and more picturesque roads.
Suitable routes were identified during the week and an itinerary for the visit by the students in April was agreed.
I look forward to showing the students this beautiful city and for them to experience climbs like they will not have seem before in the East Midlands!
